Photos: There’s more than BRT along Avenida 9 de Julio

Citiscope’s urban innovation feature this week is about how Buenos Aires built a bus rapid transit system into its biggest boulevard, Avenida 9 de Julio. But BRT is just the beginning of the changes happening on the city’s streets. Buses were re-routed off narrow side streets and into the BRT lanes, allowing about 100 city blocks to be turned into quiet pedestrian areas. Meanwhile, the city has built about 130 km (80 miles) of bicycle lanes and adopted bike sharing, creating a growing urban cycling culture.
