New report takes stock of Bloomberg Mayors Challenge winners

(ESB Professional/

The philanthropy headed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has sponsored competitions for innovative ideas in the United States, Europe, and now, Latin America. Prize money worth millions has garnered these “mayors challenges” a lot of attention.

But what have cities learned along the way?

That’s the focus of a new report called Bringing Bold Ideas to LifeThe report looks at past winners, and takes stock of difficulties they faced while implementing their ideas as well as strategies used to overcome them.

Each city details something it wishes it had known at the beginning. For example, Warsaw — selected for its plan to improve the mobility of blind people — realizes it should have engaged citizens earlier in its planning.

The report also includes a progress report on the winners. Houston, for example, reveals that its “One Bin for All” recycling program stalled in 2015, but is now moving forward under a new mayor.
