A 3D printer will make an office building in Dubai

Dubai’s skyline boasts the world’s tallest skyscraper. Soon, it will also have the world’s first 3D-printed office building, Andrew Torchia reports for Reuters.

The one-story office is to be constructed over a few weeks by a two-story tall 3D printer. Even the furniture and other interior features would be manufactured with the printer. The project is a collaboration between Dubai and Winsun, a Chinese company that specializes in “printing” houses, the article says.

Fast-expanding Dubai views the technique as a way to reduce construction costs and time. The technology already is seen as a promising way for Global South cities to easily create basic tools, shelter and transport.

The office will eventually be part of Dubai’s Museum of the Future, to open in 2017.
