Green Down Under: Plan would boost Australia’s urban green space 20 percent

Australia launched a national initiative in early November that aims to expand the country’s urban green space 20 percent by 2020. The 202020 Vision would add new parks, orchards and bike paths, among other amenities, and is spearheaded by the Australian government, academia and private sector, Australia’s Architecture & Design reports.

Goals include the promotion of health, productivity and pollution reduction. Advocates also note that green canopies could help cool Australia’s cities and reverse the “heat island” effect caused by too much asphalt and concrete.

The blueprint includes plans for the Goods Line, Sydney’s version of New York’s High Line, an elevated park created along abandoned railroad tracks.
