EU to invest $274 million to make cities smarter

The European Union plans to invest 170 million British pounds ($274 million U. S.) over the next two years to make European cities “smarter.” The “Smart Cities Partnership Strategic Implementation Plan” emphasizes new models to collect and share data among cities, integrate information technology into transport and energy infrastructure, and establish innovation zones.

Under an open data approach, the information would be accessible to citizens, businesses and governments. EU press release
